TFC Water Quality Committee Report

Team Report for 2005

Prepared by Bill Riehl

I.  TEAM MEMBERS

Metro Winchester - Tom Roddy, Dan Eismon, Dan Maher, Dave Lowe

Mid & West - Fred Doyle, Rick Silver, Bob Rhodes, Bill Henderson, Jerry Smith

North - Larry Bowers, Ted Dykins, Dale Cooper

II.  TEST PROGRAMS

Tests are performed on a monthly basis, May to October.  Special thanks and appreciation to all team members above for accomplishing 444 total data points this year.  Of the physical/chemical data limits drawn up in 2004, 4 of  5 are still valid and satisfactory for D. O., Ph, Alkalinity, and nitrate.  Only 2 of 53 D. O. tests were barely below limit (0.5 below 5 ppm).  Surface level visibility appears to be slightly below 2004, but it appears that the surface visibility may be better in the deeper sections of the lake.  This may be due to greater depth for particulates to settle.

E-coli - All 53 tests at 8 monthly and 4 special sites were within limits.

III.  SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS of potential pollution sites

    a.  Tan foam on surface of Sarvis Branch was found due to seasonal biological degradation of some leaves.  Water quality was OK.

    b.  Woods Dame Outlet - Tests in spring found water OK.  Twice, we previously found D. O. below 5 ppm, late in the fall.

    c.  Temporary local foul odor at City Park - Water found OK.  Suspect odor due t6o fish cleaning after previous weekend tournament.

    d.  Pollution - was found due to a leak from a sewer line.  The Winchester Utility Department was notified and repairs were begun the next day and they continue to work on the problem.  WU expects to be complete by the end of December2005.

IV.  IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

As a probable result of the massive lake "development" program now underway by the state, TVA and "developers", it becomes exigent that we investigate potential methods for improvement and /or alleviation of the expected increase in degradation of the water quality.  A proposal has been prepared and submitted to the Sanders Foundation for a $5,000 grant.  This includes literature R&D, consultation with outside experts, preparation and publication of our just completed 5 year water quality testing program, and publicity programs.  Literature review has already begun.  Award of the grant is expected by December 30, 2005.  Moneys would be made available during 2006.
